City Journey June 2011‘HIDDEN DUNDEE’ 38 people took part in the sold-out Go Dundee City Journey 2011 on Saturday 4th June. The aim was to visit places that are important to the city (e.g. socially, culturally, economically) but to which people don’t normally have access. The overall objective of the city journey events is to increase people’s sense of engagement, pride and confidence in their city. Here are some photos of the City Journey 2011 taken by Joe Lafferty (linked here from his Flikr page). Dundee House (new Dundee City Council offices)This was a unique chance to take part in a guided tour of Dundee City Council’s brand new headquarters prior to council staff moving in, guided by Tommy Porter (Dundee City Council Project QS). ![]() Relief sculpture - one of several throughout Dundee House. But what is it? (answer at bottom of page) Tayside House (top floor)For most people this was their last chance to visit Tayside House before the landmark building is demolished. We visited the top floor to take in the views and to hear a presentation on the exciting Dundee Waterfront and V&A Dundee projects from Mike Galloway, Director of City Development at Dundee City Council. Dundee RepWe heard about Dundee’s multi-award winning repertory theatre from Chief Executive and Artistic Director James Brining and were treated to a backstage tour as the theatre prepared for the afternoon performance of ‘Anna Karenina’ by the Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scotland’s only full-time acting company. The ShoreThe Shore is a young person’s venue that provides a range of arts-related activities catering for the interests and needs of 10-19 year-olds. We heard about the range of activities that take place within this historic building and took a short tour. We also heard about Xplore, an organisation that provides individualised support and learning for young people. An excellent lunch was provided in The Shore’s café. STV StudiosWe visited STV’s Dundee studios from which the Tayside news bulletins are broadcast, accompanied by Craig Millar, the STV News Tayside producer. Tag GamesDundee remains a global player in the field of computer games development and Tag Games creates games for the biggest platforms on the planet – mobile, handheld and online. We heard about the challenges and successes of computer games development in Dundee from Managing Director Paul Farley. And finally, many thanks to National Express Dundee and our driver Alan for providing our bus transport on the day.
The City Journey 2011 was organised by Go Dundee as part of A Dundee Wave of Change – a component of the nationwide project A Scottish Wave of Change which, as part of the Cultural Olympiad, is looking at the future of Scotland through stories.
