Song lyrics

Below are lyrics written by Walter and Michelle about Dundee as part of the Dundee Wave of Change project.

A JEWEL CALLED DUNDEE (by Walter Blacklaw)

There’s a brave new wind a blowing
Mid the doldrums’ of decay
And it knows just where it’s going
As it comes along your way
And you too will soon be knowing
As a clearer dawn unfolds
Bringing to you a brighter view
Of what the future holds
Great things lie bright before us
So with the world let’s be
Praising in raptures glorious
A jewel called Dundee
There’s a wave of change a surging
Towards a faint horizons rim
And a wider scope emerging
From a vista that grew dim
And tomorrow will be judging
How you grasped the day’s demands
And how you sought what fortune brought
To mould it in your hands
Great things lie bright before us
So with the world let’s be
Praising in raptures glorious
A jewel called Dundee
So let’s seek that innovation
Which we know can come about
Far too long there’s been stagnation
Sweep the dust and debris out
Get that feeling of elation
Let your voice be heard aloud
Our city is a chrysalis
Of which we may be proud

WHAT WILL THE FUTURE BRING? (by Michelle Holden)

All I want is a miracle
Not for myself but for everyone
This old town has been beaten hard
Everywhere you turn places closing down
Promises with true intention
Need the funds to materialise
MP’s shout we’ll give it all
Hopes are lost it’s been heard before
Drugs and crime chewed a hole in us
All the way to oblivion
I know that Dundee’s not all to blame
But when will we see a time for change
The Waterfront is all we get now
But what about the poverty?
Families with no place to live now
Can’t survive on just fantasy
The futures bright I must believe
I dream of better communities
Neighbours watch out for them next door
Without the fear of being robbed
Watching as the years just fly by
10 years pass and everything looks fine
Everywhere I look I see progress
Then I wake and was I just dreaming?
Promises with real intention
Promises with real intention
Promises with real intention
What will the future bring?

WISHING ON A STAR (by Michelle Holden)

There’s no place that I would rather be
Than back home
In the City of Discovery where the River Tay flows
Dundee’s more than it has ever been
It’s the place you wanna be
There are riches to discover here
We got rid of poverty
Oh is this a dream too far?
Or am I standing on a cloud wishing on a star?
What will become of our great city?
Will we be proud in 2020?
10

years from now I see it all
Sunshine pouring through the clouds
We’ve got everything we dreamed of here
Happy faces all around
What the future brings is in our hands
Children growing up so fast
They’re the lifeline of this Dundee town
What we do can give them pride
Oh is this a dream too far?
Or am I standing on a cloud wishing on a star?
What will become of our great city?
Will we be proud in 2020?
Unemployment left us long ago
Left our industry to rise
Dundee became a place of hope and pride
Now the drug lords have run dry
Oh is this a dream to far?
Or am I standing on a cloud wishing on a star?
What will become of our great city?
Will we be proud in 2020?
